Reading
We have completed the Fall assessments and have started our guided reading groups. Students will be bringing a Book-in-a-Bag home every evening except Friday. Sometimes the book will be one that we have read in our group together. Sometimes the book will be one the student has selected themselves. Please read the book together, record the title of the story, and send the book back the next day. A bookmark that includes great strategies for figuring out new words is enclosed in the bag as well. Refer to these strategies when your child gets stuck on a word. Be sure to check for understanding as you engage in a conversation with your child throughout the reading time.
Writing
Our students are continuing to work on personal narratives. Students will be looking at their own writing this week and will be setting goals for themselves. Examples might be that a student would strive to make letters more accurately, create appropriate spacing between words, add punctuation, or use the resources in the room to spell more accurately. Students will also be adding an appropriate ending to their written piece.
Word Work
This is the first week of word work. Students have received a small composition notebook to use for this study. Each week, students will be writing 4 new words to work on for the week. There are currently 2 lists of words varying in difficulty. Students will be given the list that is best for each of them. A more challenging list will be available later if needed. For now, we are establishing routines and seeing how the word work carries over into everyday writing. Students will also be learning 2-3 word patterns each week. They will have an opportunity to work with the word lists and the patterns at school, but are encouraged to study them at home as well. A list of suggested activities or ways to work with words will be provided at the Curriculum Night meeting, September 11th. Please keep the Word Work journal in the Book-in-a-Bag baggie so we can use it at school when necessary.
Social Studies
We have mostly completed our opening study of building community. Students will be completing a computer project later in September as a culminating event. They will be drawing a picture and writing a sentence to demonstrate a way to Live Kind, Choose Happiness, or Unleash Learning. This will be done using the Pixie program.
Science
This week students were asked to draw a picture of the sun and to write as much as they could about what they know about it. We will be using this information to guide us as we launch a study into the energy of the sun. Last week we attempted to initiate this study with the making of solar sm'ores. The sun was hot! The chocolate melted quickly! We were a mess! Yummm!
Other Information
Please join us Wednesday evening, September 11th
at 6:30 p.m. in room 22 for Curriculum Night information.
Thank you for your great support!
