Reading
For the month of November, we have been working hard to identify characters. We are noticing what kind of characters they are by their words and their actions. We are noticing that if we pay close attention to each page, we can see everything that is happening to our characters and we can tell more about them. We are discovering that if we reread a story, we can tell more about the characters. We can predict what they might do next, and we can compare their feelings to our own. We will be rereading several texts this week and will be comparing the characters and their feelings to our own. We will ask ourselves if we would feel the same way if we were the characters. Spend time talking about the characters you read about and discussing if you would feel the same.
Be sure to read the Book In The Bag each evening Monday through Thursday. Your child will be selecting some of those to share with you at night. We are always talking about choosing a "Just Right Book." It should not be too difficult or too easy. Work those reading muscles and build reading stamina! Thanks for your support!
Writing
We are continuing to work on "opinion" writing this week. Students began the work last week as they created a graphic organizer that contained 3 reasons for choosing the activity they preferred at recess. They created an opening sentence to tell their readers what they would be reading about. Students will complete the writing this week and will use a self-assessment rubric to evaluate their own work. Ask your child about what they like to do at recess. Ask them to support their choice with 2-3 reasons.
Word Work
Please work on the following words and patterns this week:
will, two, off, teacher
Patterns: words that begin with f, l, and fl example: fat, fan, log, lot, flat, flip
We will be having frequent checkups for our word work. Sometimes we will have dictation sentences. Sometimes we will have an opportunity for students to spell word pattern words that they create. Students should use the word work journal to practice using each week's words.
It is so very important to practice previously given words, especially if your child does not yet consistently spell the high frequency words from the list.
Use www.spellingcity.com to create unique spelling practice for your child.
Math
This week we are going to be focusing on adding 3 whole numbers with a sum of 20 or less. We will be using double ten frames to practice finding the sums. Students will be encouraged to find sums of 10 to anchor their understanding. They should be able to find the sums of 10 fluently at this point. Work-It-Out-Wednesday will be an activity called License Plates. Students will work with a partner to find combinations of numbers that could appear on a license plate. The sum of the numbers will be 6. Students love the activities we do on Wednesdays!
Social Studies
Our unit on economics continues as we discuss producers and consumers this week. Students will also be given a challenge this week. Our challenge will be to create a way to produce a product that consumers will buy in an effort to generate funds for a service project. Basically, we will help students create advertising and products in the form of holiday cards. We will be making cards and selling them later in December. The proceeds will benefit the Hilliard Food Bank. You may have noticed a letter requesting card-making supplies to enhance this project. Thank you in advance for any donations you are able to send our way.
