Reading
Good readers notice how books are similar and how they are different. They find how books have common characters, common authors, and similar illustrations. Readers also notice how books are different. They might have different messages using the the same characters, or they might be different in how they progress through the story. This week we will be using several Piggie and Elephant books by Mo Willems. He is a great author that uses these simple characters to teach simple but important life lessons about friendship.
Word Work
Week Three of Word Work continues with the following lists:
List 1: up, us, my, we List 2: is, my, in, you
Both groups are responsible for learning the word patterns of:
-ill as in pill and fill
-all as in ball and fall
-ell as in bell and fell
Remember, students should be able to spell any given word with the word patterns. We will begin having Word Work Checkups this week. In a Checkup, students will be expected to spell any words previously learned up to the present time. They will be asked to write dictated sentences correctly. Checkups will be given periodically and not on any specific day of the week. Keep working on those words at home please. Thanks!
Writing
Students continue to write personal narratives. This week we will write about a favorite birthday memory. They will talk with partners about their ideas, then they will draw detailed pictures to accompany their ideas. Following the drawing, students will focus on adding details to tell their story more completely. They will be asked to think about the who, what, where, when, and how of their stories. Answering these questions will add depth to student work. On Friday, students will have the opportunity to share their work with peers. Peers will also offer positive comments on work as well as areas that students can improve. Using the ELMO projector really helps this process. Thanks PTO for this great teaching tool!
Math
Our work this week will revolve around really understanding the number 10. We will be using ten frames to create all of the combinations or ways to get to 10. We will also be using The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle to create a math story on Friday. Be sure to check out the math games available on the Hilliard Schools website. Students can locate them through the Math tab on the Elementary eSchool site.
Science
We will be observing and recording our observations about our grass growing experiment on Monday. Ask your child about what he or she observed that evening. We will continue to read more about the sun this week as well. Students are learning that it really is the principle source of energy for life.
Dot Day
Wednesday we will be celebrating art as we use the time to create our own individual dot art! Students will listen to a video of the story by Peter H. Reynolds shortly after their arrival. They will be encouraged to create their own unique dot. Other dot activities will take place that afternoon as well. Be sure to check with your child about this awesome experience!
