Reading
For the next couple of weeks, we will be looking more closely at the parts of a story. We will learn to identify the characters, setting, beginning, problem, and ending of stories. Students will be able to "map" the different parts of a story. We will dig a little deeper into the characters as we describe them in terms of what they act like, and what they look like. Students will eventually be able to write a sentence about each character they encounter.
Writing
This week we will continue to develop our opinion writing pieces. After listening to "Now It Is Winter" by Eileen Spinelli, students will create a chart that showcases the positive points of each season. Then they will be given the opportunity to choose the season they enjoy most. Creating a graphic organizer, students will write an opinion writing piece. Throughout the week, students will write an opening sentence that tells the reader what the story is about. They will support their opinion with the three ideas from their graphic organizer. Finally, students will write a closing sentence that wraps up the piece. Students will use a rubric to self assess their progress.
Word Work
Words for all students to work on this week include:
day
animal
boy
go
dot
dish
rag
ring
drag
drink
The patterns are words that begin with d, r, and dr. Students should be able to spell all of the above listed words as well as other words that begin with these patterns. We will create an anchor chart of possible words together at school. Throughout the week, we will use these words in various ways.
Please review previously listed words frequently. Many students are retaining the words from our word work, but several are struggling to hold on to them. Please use the Word Work Journal for your own practice. You may keep those at home throughout the week. Return them on Friday.
Handwriting
By this point in the year, students should be able to know the difference between capital letters and lower case letters. If your child struggles with this differentiation, please practice writing words correctly. You may use the word work journal for this as well. Each week, we usually focus on the specific formation of a particular letter or letters. We use this letter or letters in phonics practice as well. Check for the letter or letters of the week in your child's folder.
Math
This month we are really focusing on the addition and subtraction strategies through 20. We will be working on understanding that numbers 11-20 are made of "a ten and some more." (Eleven is a ten and one more. Fourteen is a ten and 4 more.)
Students will be looking to "find a ten" when adding.
For example: 8+6=
8+2+4=
10+4=14
They will be "decomposing to find a ten" when subtracting.
For example: 13-4=
13-3-1=
10-1=9
It is so critical that students know the sums of 10. Please work on these if your child does not easily add and subtract through 10.
Social Studies
We will be continuing our economics unit this week as we talk about supply and demand, scarcity, and trading. We will continue to create holiday greeting cards to sell later this month. Thank you for sending in the many supplies to accent this project. Students will also create a commercial for the morning announcements and posters for advertisement of the card sale.
