Reading
This month, we will be observing the characters in our stories to see how they act and what they do. We will be able to follow their development and make predictions based on what we learn about them. This week, we will begin by asking, "Does my book tell a story about someone?" That character can be real on make-believe. The character might be a person or an animal. Try to notice how characters are acting and what they do as you read with your child.
Writing
We loved our field trip to the Hilliard Historical Society last Friday! Thanks PTO for sponsoring it! We are using this common experience to write a personal narrative. Students will be evaluating their own writing in this genre a final time on Friday. Ask your child to tell you about the trip. This conversation will enhance writing as students are able to recall and then write about the various details they remember from the trip.
Word Work
During the first trimester of school, we used 2 separate lists for students each week. We used 2-3 word patterns as well. In an effort to work harder and smarter with the words we have, we will be changing the format for the second trimester. This more narrow focus will allow us more flexibility in daily practice. Therefore, all students will be having the same list each week. Students will be challenged with bonus words as needed. Please continue to practice all of the words in the word work journal.
New words: up, big, house, these
Patterns: -ing as in sing and ring
-ang as in bang and rang
-ong as in long and song
We will be having frequent checkups as well. This may be a quick game of "Sparkle" or a sentence dictation assessment. This may also be an oral exercise or simple writing activity.
Thank you for your flexibility. We are trying to make word work flow smoothly into reading and writing.
Math
Our focus this week is on nailing down the strategies for addition. Students should be able to tell about the various ways we can add numbers. Those ways include:
-counting all
-counting on
-adding 0
-adding 1 or 2
-making a 10
We will be practicing writing and solving number sentences as well. Students must be able to draw and explain their math thinking. Ask questions like, "How do you know?" or "Explain why you know that is the answer." Don't accept an answer like, "Because I just know." Dig deeper.
History
This week we are creating our Museum of the Future! We will be writing about our understanding and will showcase our learning as we become curators of our museum. On Friday, we will be sharing with other classrooms in our building. Check next week for photos or video of our presentation!
