Reading
Students will be working on asking questions about things they've read or have heard read to them. They will be digging deeper into their understanding as they listen to both fictional and nonfictional texts this week. They will be recording their questions in their journal. As the week progresses, they will have the opportunity to share their questions with peers and the class.
In addition, students will be responding to what they read in Guided Reading Groups. They will have 1 or 2 written response opportunities each week. Please assist your child in completing the writing and return it to school the next day. Thank you for your support.
Writing
We continue to work on writing informative pieces this week. Students will be using peer critiques and questions to strengthen their writing. They will share their Think Pad ideas with a friend and will be asking for input from them as to how to improve the information in the writing. We will celebrate our writing with a class sharing event on Friday.
Word Work
New words include: your, were, don't, where
Patterns include 2 syllable words with and without a double consonant in the middle. Students will need to learn what "looks right" as well as what "sounds right" while using these patterns. Words such as: baby and today don't have a double consonant. Words such as pretty, daddy, little, and rabbit don't contain a double consonant in the middle. Please review these words as well as previously learned words.
Please work on using these words in sentences. Your child can write them in his or her word work journal.
Math
We are working geometry. Last week we worked on 2 dimensional shapes such as circle, rectangle, square, rhombus, trapezoid, triangle, and hexagon. We learned about their attributes and how to sort and compare them. This week we continue our work as we learn about 3 dimensional shapes such as sphere, cube, rectangular prism, cone, cylinder, and triangular prism. Students will learn their attributes and how to construct them.
Continue to work on computation of addition and subtraction facts through 20. Students should be able to efficiently and quickly compute these problems.
Social Studies
We continue to learn about maps this week. We are learning about different kinds of maps, how maps are used, and how to construct them. We will be creating several maps together as we start small and create a map of our classroom. We will also be creating maps of our bedrooms as an at home project.
