Welcome to October! I love this month filled with changing leaves, blue skies, pumpkins, and cozy fires.
Reading
This week we are continuing to think about what a story or book will be about by looking at each page before we read it. We have already been predicting the language and ideas that we expect to see in a book by looking at its cover and title. Now, we are stretching that idea to include specific pages of the story as well. We will further our comprehension as we "retell across our fingers." This means we can use our fingers to help us tell what happened: first, then, next, after that, and finally. Practice this technique after you read your book-in-the-bag books this week.
Writing
Our writing will be related to our reading as we retell about our experiences with Dot Day. After students create a list of things we did on Wednesday, they will be selecting 3 of the ideas that they would like to tell about. Using a graphic organizer, students will write about one small part of their experience for 3 days. They will be using the transition words used in retelling stories to retell their stories. Finally, students will learn how to write an ending for their stories.
Another main focus this week in writing is that writers write so that other people may read their work and understand what the writer is trying to communicate. So, we will be working on using good punctuation, spacing, and accurate spelling.
Word Work
List 1 words are: go, he, me is
List 2 words are: look, the, what, why
Patterns are: -ip as in tip and lip
-op as in pop and hop
-ap as in map and cap
Students need to be practicing these words at home as well as at school. They need to be able to use the patterns to spell many other words besides the examples listed. The point of having patterns is to help students create a toolbox of tools that can be used in a variety of words. We will be having frequent checkups to monitor progress. Thank you for working with your child. Please use the Word Work mini journal to practice at home.
Math
In math we continue to work on making sums of 10. Students will be using the ten frames to work on becoming able to instantly see any number 0-10. They should also be able to know how far that number shown is from the number 10. This concept builds the understanding of addition and subtraction and how they are related.
Students should be able to count from 1-120 starting at any number. Work with your child especially on the transition numbers of 29-30, 39-40, 49-50, etc.
We will also be using The Very Hungry Caterpillar in our Work-It-Out-Wednesday problem.
Science
Hopefully, our grass has sprouted over the weekend! Check with your child for the results! We will be working on some writing that shows our understanding of the sun and how it is the principle source of energy.
Other Information
