Reading
This week we will focus on creating a mental movie as we read or listen to books and stories. Good readers use the cover, the title, and the first sentences of a book to start to build a mental movie of the story. Good readers are thinking about the types of words they might encounter in a story and will be checking to see if those words are found or not found. Good readers also stop reading to check for understanding if they are confused. They read again, and ask questions to clarify understanding. Good readers connect to the story in big ways. They might connect something they have read to their own lives or what they have read might change how the reader thinks.
Continue to read the books in bags and return them promptly.
Word Work
We will review the word patterns of -it and -ot this week. There seems to be a misunderstanding between these sounds. We will also be introducing the patterns of -ag and -og. Please help your child notice these patterns or chunks in their daily reading and writing.
List 1 words are: an, do, so, of.
List 2 words are: like, and, saw, went.
Check out www.spellingcity.com for great ways to practice word work.
Writing
We continue to work on "small moments" writing. As writers, we will be practicing telling our stories to our partners, illustrating our stories, and checking for evidence of meeting our writing goals. (These writing goals were established on Friday as students looked at their own writing work and chose an area they want to work on.) Areas of focus at this point include: using capital letters, using punctuation, spacing words appropriately, and using resources to spell words correctly.
Math
In math, we will be writing numerals through 100, counting small handfuls of objects and recording the numeral for the total, counting orally forward from a given number, and exploring 5 frames. Students will be starting to instantly recognize dots on the frames up through 10 as well. Thank you for being so diligent about completing math homework journals!
Science
Students are very excited to further our study of the Sun. We created a chart last week where we are monitoring our learning of the facts about the sun. We will be conducting an experiment involving sun, soil, and grass seed this week. Ask your child about updates on our work.
Other Information
We will be creating a "sun" on Friday. We would be so grateful if you would send in any fun recycling materials that could be used in this project. Thanks for anything you think we could use. Each child will be creating his or her own amazing "sun!"
Book Orders due the 20th! :) The code for online ordering is H8KBH.
