Reading
This week we are looking at why authors write. They usually write for 3 different purposes. We will compare those purposes through the acronym of PIE. Authors try to Persuade us by presenting a topic and trying to convince us to agree with their opinion. Sometimes authors simply write to Entertain us with a captivating or humorous tale. Finally, the third reason authors write is to Inform us. They write non-fiction texts to teach us and give us new information. Students will be reading and listening to many stories or texts this week. They will talk about how each author had a specific purpose in mind when they crafted the text.
Writing
We continue to write reviews this week. We will be comparing them to the texts we read that try to persuade us. We will also be trying to improve our writing with more explicit and interesting vocabulary. We will create an anchor chart of "sparkly" words to use in our writing. Students will be choosing a favorite topic to write about later this week. They will again use the graphic organizer to prepare their writing. Students will be assessing their writing as well. They will be looking at content, punctuation, and spelling.
Word Work
new words: people, kick, want, school
new patterns: s-, t-, st- as in sip, sum, told, ten, stink, stop
Please review words previously presented in earlier lessons.
Math
We will be discovering the pattern of naming the number that is 10 more or 10 less than a given 2-digit number. For example: The number that is 10 more than 39 is 49. The number that is 10 less than 57 is 47. We will continue to work on adding 3 numbers to the sum of 20. Within that task, we will be trying to look for a ten, doubles, doubles plus 1, and doubles minus 1. Thank you for completing the homework promptly and returning it to school the next day. Your support is so greatly appreciated.
Science
Students have discovered that matter can be changed by heating, freezing, tearing, mixing, taking apart, and putting together. This week we will be looking at motion. We will be discovering that objects can move in many ways including: straight line, zigzag, round and round, and back and forth. Students will also make "foil creations" that float. Of course, recording our observations make us good scientists!
Other Information
Please send in recyclable materials that could be used to make a boat. Thank you for your support!
