Reading
This week we will be starting the midyear assessments for reading. (Students will be reading individually with me.) They will continue to bring home a book-in-a-bag each day, but will not always have read it in class.
Our skill work will focus on noting the difference between long and short vowel sounds. We will work on the pattern of CVCe as well. This helps students decode unfamiliar words by checking to see if this pattern exists. This pattern creates a long vowel sound, as compared to the CVC pattern that creates a short vowel sound.
Writing
We have completed our unit on opinion writing as we finished our recent "review" writing. This week we begin our next type of writing, "informative" writing. Students will be asked to create a list of ideas about things at which they are experts. Using these ideas, they will begin to share their expertise through informative pieces. Over the next few weeks, they will learn how to organize their information and to present it in a way that captures their audiences and teaches them about a specific topic. Talk with your child about possible ideas.
Word Work
This week we are looking at words that end in s, end in t, and end in st. Other words to work on include: our, now, come, and thing. Please work on these words as well as any other previously presented words.
Math
We will begin a unit on geometry this week as we explore pattern blocks. Students will use pattern blocks to create pictures. They will also create a graph of the blocks used to create this picture.
Please continue to practice the math skills that have been presented thus far. Talk and write about math whenever possible. Check the math homework journal for assignments. Thank you for your support!
Science
We are wrapping up our Physical Science unit this week as we record the making of our "recycle boats" that we created last week. We will also explore how to make a ball speed up and how to make it slow down. A booklet of our learning will be sent home this week. Please review it together as preparation for a post-assessment that will occur on Thursday, February 13th.
