Reading
This week in reading comprehension, we will be working on noticing how authors use descriptive language to create a mental picture for their audience. We will be reading many selections by Eileen Spinelli to help us visualize stories better. Some of the titles include: The Best Story Ever, Three Pebbles and A Song, Someday, Heat Wave, and In My New Yellow Shirt. We will also continue to work on using many different strategies to tackle tricky words while we are reading for ourselves. We will review the strategies on the bookmarks that are in the book-in-the-bag. Encourage your child to tell you different ways he or she can tackle those new words.
Students will also be talking about how to choose a "just right" book from the library as well. Encourage your child to make selections that he or she can read with some help at home. Recently, many students are choosing non-fiction texts that are much too difficult for them. Thank you for your support.
Writing
Students have been working on writing personal narratives for most of the first trimester. They have used graphic organizers to organize ideas and have shared many of their stories with peers. This week as we continue to make our writing readable for others, we will utilize a checklist for self-evaluation of writing. Included in the checklist are areas for structure, development (of the story), and language conventions. Students will evaluate their own writing as they look for order, accurate spelling, and punctuation. By the end of the week, your child will have written their own personal narrative and evaluated it using the checklist. This will be saved for the Data Binder that your child has at school. This will be shared at Parent/Teacher Conferences in November.
Word Work
List 1 words include: will, you, out, into
List 2 words include: some, said, them, are
All students will study the word patterns of: -ick, -ock, -ack.
While we assign specific words each week, it is most important that students use what they work on in their daily writing. Please look back over previously learned words and practice those words that need more work.
Math
This week we continue to work on adding 1 and 2 more, and subtracting 1 and 2. We will also be using a new tool called a "rekenrek." Students move colored beads to create number sense within 10 and 20. We will begin some simple addition and subtraction number sentences. Students will always be working on showing their understanding by drawing pictures, writing words, and writing number sentences. Look for ways to practice these skills at home. Have your child figure out how many plates are needed to set the table. How many pieces of silverware? How many glasses? Simple, real-life problem solving is the best way to make math connections. Also, check out the games on the Hilliard City Schools website. There are great resources available to everyone.
History
Thank you so much for sharing your beloved artifacts with our class! We have really enjoyed learning about the past through these treasures. This week we will continue to read several books about the ways things have changed over time regarding communication, food production, and clothing. We use this time to begin to brainstorm how our needs will be met in the future. Our students will be creating a Museum of the Future to showcase their understanding. Please send in items that we might use to create this museum. Thanks so much! Recyclable items are great!
